A hawk and a Bullfrog

Today I saw a Red Tailed Hawk. I think. I couldn’t really be sure.

He was standing in the pond—with his tail submerged.

Shortly, he half flopped and wobbled his way up the bank clutching his lunch; a Bullfrog.

He then spent the next five to 10 minutes busily preparing and consuming what I’m sure he regarded as a very tasty meal; all the while being very observant that another creature higher up the food chain did not treat him in a similar fashion.

All of this activity occurred somewhat behind the beached Jon boat and shortly thereafter I saw him flying across the pond with his recently deceased and partially consumed lunch limply dragging its dangling rear legs.

I must confess my hawk identity skills are somewhat lacking and I was so enthralled by the event I never did achieve a positive identification of this aerial predator.

Let’s see; today a hawk caught a Bullfrog. About a week ago a Great Blue Heron caught a Chipmunk. Should I be sensing some sort of role reversal here?

Hmmmm; these amazing critters!
